Latest Technology Used in Image Resizing Tools
Image Interpolation allows you to create a high-resolution image from a low-resolution one through a process called interpolation, which is part of image resolution conversion technologies. This process is also referred to as image resampling, resizing, digital zooming, and image enhancement, to name a few.
This technique is known as “Iterative Curve Based Interpolation” or ICBI, as described by Andrea Giachetti and Nicola Asuni at BMVC 2008, then discussed further in “Real Time Artifact Free Image Upscaling” in IEEE Transaction on Image processing. A new algorithm for image upscaling based on the iterative smoothing of second order derivatives (ICBI, Iterative Curvature Based Interpolation). The algorithm is turned on with the initial conditions that can be obtained from the edge of the picture with a simple filling rule that utilizes second order derivatives (FCBI, Fast Curvature Based Interpolation) which in itself is also an edge directed interpolation.
The primary procedure is divided into two parts. Initially, an adaptive algorithm is utilized that interpolates pixel values in the direction where the second derivative of the image is the lowest. The adaptive pixel values are then refined by an iterative PIDP algorithm that minimizes the differences in the second order image derivatives while enabling maxima of the second order derivative value to override isolevel curves smooth. The first algorithm alone produces images with edges that are preserved and that are qualitatively measurably better than those obtained with other equally efficient techniques reviewed in the literature. The complete method allows the construction of interpolated images that look “natural” and free from artifacts produced by linear and nonlinear methods. Both objective and subjective tests performed on a large set of natural images demonstrate the clear advantages of the one pass technique compared with the best known techniques.
